You turn on the shower and the bathroom smells like a boiled egg went bad. Or you fill a glass at the kitchen sink and catch it right as you lift the glass.
If you are on well water anywhere in Hernando, Pasco, Citrus, or Hillsborough, you have either dealt with this or you will. It is one of the most common calls we get.
The good news is that the smell is fixable and the fix is usually straightforward. The better news is that it is almost never the thing people are afraid it is.
What the smell actually is
Hydrogen sulfide gas.
That is it. A gas dissolved in your water that comes out of solution when the water hits the air, which is why you smell it strongest in the shower and in a freshly poured glass.
It gets into well water two ways in our area.
The first is the ground itself. Central Florida sits on the Floridan Aquifer, and that water moves through limestone loaded with sulfur compounds. In places where oxygen is scarce underground, bacteria that live down there convert sulfate into hydrogen sulfide. This is natural. It has been happening for a very long time and it has nothing to do with anything you did.
The second is your water heater, and that one is a different problem with a different fix. More on that in a moment.
What it is not
A few things people worry about, cleared up.
It is not sewage. Hydrogen sulfide smells unpleasant and sewage contains hydrogen sulfide, so people connect the two. But sulfur in your well water is a geology problem, not a contamination problem. If you had actual sewage intrusion, the smell would be the least of what a water test found.
It is usually not a health emergency. At the levels found in household well water, hydrogen sulfide is classed as a nuisance rather than a health hazard. The EPA does not set an enforceable health limit for it. It ruins the taste and smell of your water and it corrodes plumbing over time, but at typical household levels it is not making you sick.
That said, “usually” is doing work in that sentence. Sulfur smell sometimes travels with other things you do want to know about, like iron bacteria or elevated manganese. Which is why the first step is always a test, not a purchase.
It is not dirty pipes. People flush their lines, bleach the fixtures, replace a faucet, and the smell comes right back. It comes back because the source is upstream of all of that.
The five minute test that tells you where it is coming from
Before you spend a dollar, do this.
Run the cold water at a tap. Smell it. Then run the hot at the same tap and smell that.
Smell on hot water only: your problem is the water heater, not the well. Most water heaters contain a magnesium anode rod, a sacrificial piece of metal that protects the tank from rusting. That rod can react with sulfate in the water and produce hydrogen sulfide right inside the tank. Swapping the magnesium rod for an aluminum or zinc one usually clears it. A plumber handles this and it is not an expensive job.
Smell on both hot and cold: the sulfide is coming in from the well. That is the case that needs treatment.
Smell at one fixture only: likely a drain issue or a trap that has dried out, not your water at all.
That single test saves people a lot of money. We have been called out for sulfur smell more than once and found a water heater anode rod at the bottom of it, which is a cheaper conversation than the one the homeowner was braced for.
What actually fixes it
If the smell is on both hot and cold, the sulfide is in your well water and it has to come out before it reaches the house.
Aeration is the main answer in our area, and for good reason. Hydrogen sulfide is a gas, and gases want to leave water when the water is exposed to air. An aeration system does exactly that on purpose. It mixes air through the water in a tank, the sulfide gas separates out and vents away, and the water that continues into your house has lost the smell.
Aeration has a second benefit that matters a lot in Central Florida. That same exposure to oxygen converts dissolved iron into a solid particle that a filter can then catch. Since our wells frequently carry both sulfur and iron, one system handles both problems. That is why we lean on it here.

Chemical oxidation is the other route. Chlorine or peroxide is injected into the water line, it oxidizes the sulfide, and a filter removes what is left. It handles very high sulfide concentrations that aeration alone can struggle with. The tradeoff is that you are now maintaining a chemical feed system and buying chemical, month after month, for as long as you own the house.
For most homes on most wells around here, aeration wins on operating cost and on the amount of attention it needs from you.
What does not fix it
A water softener will not fix sulfur smell. Softeners exchange hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, for sodium. Dissolved gas is not what they are built to remove. If someone is selling you a softener as a sulfur solution, they are selling you the wrong equipment. A softener is the right answer for hard water, and plenty of local homes need one, but it is a separate problem with separate hardware.
A small carbon filter will not hold up. Carbon does adsorb some hydrogen sulfide, and a point of use filter can knock the smell off one tap for a while. But carbon saturates, and at real sulfide levels it saturates fast. You end up replacing cartridges constantly and still smelling it in the shower.
Shocking the well is temporary. Chlorinating a well can knock down sulfate reducing bacteria and the smell will fade for a while. If the sulfide is geological, it comes back. Shocking treats a symptom, not the source.
Start with a test, not a catalog
The reason we push testing first is that sulfur rarely arrives alone. Iron, hardness, and pH all shape what equipment is right and how big it needs to be, and the sulfide concentration itself determines whether aeration alone will carry the load.
Two houses on the same street can need different systems. Sizing equipment off a guess is how people end up with a unit that underperforms from day one and a warranty argument two years later.
