You turn on the faucet and nothing comes out. Or a little sputters out, then air, then nothing.
If you are on a well, this is the moment your stomach drops. No water means no showers, no dishes, no flushing. And your first thought is that something expensive just broke.
Sometimes it did. But often it did not. A fair number of no water calls come down to something you can find, and sometimes fix, in about ten minutes with no tools and no special skill.
Here is what to check, in order, before you pay anyone to come out.
First, is it the whole house or just one tap?
Walk to another faucet and turn it on. Try one inside and one outside if you can.
If only one tap is dry, your well is fine. The problem is that single fixture or the line feeding it. A clogged aerator, a stuck valve, a frozen line on a cold morning. That is a plumbing issue, not a well issue, and it is a much smaller problem.
If every tap is dry, the trouble is at the well, the pump, or the pressure tank. Keep going down this list.
Check your breaker
Your well pump runs on electricity. If it lost power, it stopped, and the tank drained down until the taps went dry.
Go to your electrical panel. Find the breaker labeled for the well or the pump. Look closely. A tripped breaker often sits in the middle, not fully on and not fully off.
To reset it, push it all the way off first, then all the way back on. Do not just nudge it toward on.
Then go check a faucet. If water comes back, you are done. Total cost, zero.
One thing to notice. If that breaker trips again right away, stop resetting it. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you the pump is pulling too much power, which usually means the pump or its wiring is failing. Resetting it over and over can make things worse. That one is worth a call.
Look at the pressure switch
This is the small box near your pressure tank, usually with a metal cover and a couple of wires running to it. It tells the pump when to turn on and off.
A safety word first. That switch carries live electrical current. If you open the cover, do not touch anything metal inside. If you are not comfortable around electricity at all, skip this step and call us. There is no shame in it, and it is not worth a shock.
If you are comfortable, take the cover off and look at the two contact points inside. They should look clean. If they are black, burned, or pitted, that is likely your problem. Burned contacts stop sending power to the pump. This part is cheap, but replacing it means working with live wiring, so most people have us do it.
Sometimes the switch just needs a nudge to prove it is the culprit. That is a job for a tech, not a first try on your own.
Read the pressure gauge
Near the switch and tank there is usually a round gauge that reads pressure in pounds, marked PSI.
With the power on, watch it. A healthy system sits somewhere between about 40 and 60 PSI and the pump kicks on when it drops.
If the gauge reads zero and the pump is not running, power is not reaching the pump. Back to the breaker and switch.
If the gauge reads zero but you can hear the pump running, that points to a bigger problem. The pump may be running but not moving water, the well may have dropped below the pump, or a pipe may have failed underground. Stop here and call. Running a pump dry damages it fast.
Tap on the pressure tank
Knock on the side of your pressure tank with your knuckles, low and high.
The bottom should sound solid, full of water. The top should sound hollow, full of air. That is a healthy tank.
If the whole tank sounds solid and heavy all the way up, the air bladder inside has probably failed and the tank is waterlogged. This is one of the most common problems we see. It makes the pump turn on and off very fast, wears out the motor, and can leave you short on water. A waterlogged tank needs to be replaced, not repaired.
Think about the weather and the calendar
Two quick questions that explain a lot.
Did it just get cold? Central Florida does not freeze often, but when it does, an exposed pipe or a pressure tank in an unheated space can freeze and block flow. If a hard freeze came through last night and your equipment is outside or in a shed, that may be it. It usually clears as things warm up, and you can help by gently warming the exposed pipe. Never use an open flame.
Have you been using a lot of water, or has it been very dry? A long drought can lower the water level in a well. If the level drops below your pump, the pump runs but pulls air. If your water faded slowly over days rather than stopping all at once, and we are in a dry stretch, the well itself may be running low. That can mean the pump needs to be lowered, or in some cases the well needs attention.
When to stop and call
Here is the honest line. Call us if any of these are true:
- The breaker trips again as soon as you reset it
- The pump runs but no water comes and the gauge stays at zero
- You hear the pump short cycling, clicking on and off every few seconds
- The tank is waterlogged
- You checked everything above and still have nothing
- At any point you are near live wiring and not comfortable
None of those are things to wrestle with alone. A pump pulling air or a motor tripping a breaker gets more expensive the longer it runs that way.
