Constant pressure has become the upgrade everyone gets pitched.

You call about low water pressure, and somewhere in the conversation a constant pressure system comes up. Steady pressure at every tap. No more drop when someone starts the dishwasher. Modern, quiet, better.

All of that is true. The systems work, and when they are the right call they are genuinely good.

They are also sold to a lot of Central Florida homes that did not need one, at several times the cost of fixing what was actually wrong.

Here is how they work, when they earn their price, and the cheaper problem they frequently get sold to cover.

How a normal well system works

Your pump does not run continuously. It runs in bursts and stores water under pressure in between.

A pressure switch watches the pressure in your system. When it falls to a set point, usually around 40 pounds, the switch turns the pump on. The pump runs until pressure climbs to the upper set point, usually around 60, then shuts off.

Between those two points, your house runs off the pressure tank. Inside that tank is a rubber bladder with compressed air on one side and water on the other. As you use water, the air pushes it out.

So your pressure is not constant. It rides between 40 and 60 and back down. That swing is normal and most people never notice it.

How constant pressure differs

A constant pressure system puts a variable frequency drive, usually called a VFD, between the power supply and the pump motor.

Instead of running flat out or not at all, the drive changes the motor speed to match how much water you are using. Open one faucet and the pump loafs along slowly. Open four and it speeds up. The controller holds the pressure at one number, say 60 pounds, whatever the demand is.

Because water is being made on demand rather than stored, these systems use a much smaller pressure tank.

There are two real benefits beyond steady pressure. The pump starts and stops far less often, and it ramps up gently instead of slamming to full speed, which is easier on the motor and on the electrical side.

When it is genuinely the right call

Four situations where a constant pressure system earns what it costs.

Large homes with a lot of fixtures running at once. Four or five bathrooms, a family that showers on the same schedule, a big irrigation zone. Conventional systems handle high simultaneous demand by dropping pressure. A VFD handles it by speeding up.

Long runs and elevation. If the well sits well away from the house, or the house is two stories, or the property climbs, pressure loss over that distance is real. Holding a steady higher pressure at the source solves it more cleanly than oversizing everything downstream.

Household and irrigation sharing one pump. Demand from an irrigation zone is a different animal than household demand. A drive that modulates deals with the swing between them better than a switch that only knows on and off.

Persistent pressure complaints where the basics are already correct. If the tank is properly sized, precharged right, and healthy, the switch is good, the pump is sized for the well, and pressure still disappoints, then the system itself is the limit and a VFD is a real answer.

That last one is doing heavy lifting, and it is the point of this article.

The cheaper problem it gets sold to cover

Most low pressure complaints we get called out for in Hernando, Pasco, Citrus, and Hillsborough are not the pump.

They are the pressure tank.

A pressure tank has a precharge, an amount of air pressure set in the tank before any water goes in. That precharge has to match the pressure switch settings. Set wrong, or drifted over the years, and the tank stores almost nothing useful. The pump then kicks on for every small draw and shuts straight back off.

That is short cycling. It feels like weak pressure and it is quietly destroying the pump motor, because motor wear comes mostly from starts, not from running.

Bladders also fail. When the bladder ruptures, air and water mix, the air gradually leaves through your taps, and the tank becomes a plain container that holds no pressure reserve at all. Same symptoms.

And plenty of tanks were simply undersized on installation, because the small one was cheaper on the day.

Any of those three feels exactly like a house that needs constant pressure. None of them do. They need a correct tank, which costs a fraction of a VFD system and takes an afternoon.

Anyone who quotes you a constant pressure system without first checking tank precharge and bladder condition has skipped the step that solves most of these calls. Ask them what your precharge measured. There should be a number.

The Florida argument nobody makes

There is a local reason to be careful here that rarely comes up in the sales conversation.

A constant pressure system is an electronic controller. Central Florida gets more lightning than just about anywhere in the country, and our summer storms are hard on electronics attached to long buried wire runs.

A conventional setup is mechanical. A pressure switch is a set of contacts and a spring. When it fails, any pump tech carries the replacement on the truck and it is a short visit.

When a drive controller fails, you are looking at a proprietary board, a specific manufacturer, and possibly a wait for the part. In the meantime the house may have no water at all, because on most installations there is no manual bypass to fall back on.

That risk is manageable. Proper surge protection helps a lot and should be part of any constant pressure installation here. But it should be part of the decision, and it usually is not mentioned.

What to ask before you buy one

What did my pressure tank precharge measure? A real number, taken with a gauge, on your tank. Not an estimate.

Is the bladder intact? There is a simple check for this. Ask them to do it in front of you.

Is my pump correctly sized for my well’s yield? A pump that outruns what the well produces will disappoint no matter what controls it.

What surge protection comes with the drive, and what happens if the controller fails? Parts availability, expected turnaround, whether there is any way to run the pump without it.

What is the price difference against fixing what is actually wrong? Sometimes the honest answer is that constant pressure is still worth it. That is fine, as long as you chose it against a real alternative.

Our position, plainly

We install constant pressure systems. When a house needs one, it needs one, and we will say so.

We just will not sell one to a house whose pressure tank is waterlogged, because that is charging someone a great deal of money to work around a part that should have been replaced. The tank is going to keep failing underneath the new system anyway.

Diagnosis first, hardware second. We come out, measure what is happening, and tell you in plain words what is wrong and what each of the options costs. If it is the tank, we say it is the tank.
